1917-20. Royal Irish Constabulary Barracks, Clara, Co. Offaly, (where the first official action of the War of Independence took place), Thomas Whelan (executed Volunteer) and other postcards. Also with this lot a police whistle found in Clara. Other cards include an Irish Regiment Soldier, "Hoisting of The Republican flag at the G.P.O. Ruins, Easter Monday 1917". On 2 June 1920 the IRA attacked Clara RIC barracks signalling the start of the War of Independence in Offaly. Up to 200 Volunteers were involved in the elaborate operation which failed owing to defective explosives. Three Volunteers were seriously wounded, one of whom later died of his injuries. (7 items)
