1918. A Rare Photograph of Éamon de Valera . 9 by 6cm., 3.5 by 2.5in. Inscribed "The Abbey" Ballaghan, 1918".
The picture was taken in Ballaghadereen - The Bishops Palace in Ballaghadereen was known locally as 'the Abbey' as it was built on the site of the old Abbey. On 6th May 1918 de Valera addressed an anti conscription meeting on the Square in Ballaghadereen. On 17th May 1918 de Valera was arrested and jailed in England.The photograph is believed to have been taken by Joseph Sharkey.
