1922 (6 March) draft letter to Michael Collins as Chairman of the Constitutional Committee, Shelbourne Hotel from Hugh Kennedy. typescript with manuscript annotations 25 by 20cm., 10 by 8in. Provenance: Hugh Kennedy; thence by descent Kennedy strongly urges the Chairman to exclude ministers of all religions from sitting 'in either house of the Oireachtas': As a layman I realise the tremendous weight that attaches to opinions finding utterance by the mouths of ministers of religion. Many are quite overwhelmed by such opinions… because of their source rather than of their intrinsic merit. But judgement independent and untrammelled by aught save the individual conscience in relation to the public weal is a vital essential to democratic government. [The tone of this letter suggests there may have been those within the Committee or in the Government who were keen to include clergy in the Dáil or Seanad].
