1922 (27 April) Sir Francis Nugent Greer letter

Sign In to see what this sold for

1922 (27 April) Sir Francis Nugent Greer to Hugh Kennedy, Attorney General to The Provisional Government - an important letter. typescript, manuscript signature Provenance: Hugh Kennedy; thence by descent A polite but very firm letter, with the tone suggesting that the Provisional Government of Ireland was exceeding its powers as set out in the Treaty. There is a sense of urgency. Kennedy submitted his proposals on the 26th; they were considered next morning; and the reply was written later that day. Your letter of the 26th instant .. came before the Irish Technical committee this morning, and they have asked me to let you know, for the information of the Provisional Government that it is not considered feasible to proceed in the manner suggested…. The resolutions will be drawn in general terms not referring to Ireland or any part of Ireland and they will be communicated by the British Government to the Provisional Government before they are moved in the House of Commons etc., etc. Sir Francis Nugent Green (1869-1925) son of Judge Samuel McCurdy Greer, MP for Londonderry, was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and called to the Irish Bar in 1893. In 1908 he joined The Irish Office, London and remained there throughout the Treaty negotiations until 1923. (2 items)
