1929 (11 January) President William T. Cosgrave to Chief Justice Hugh Kennedy regarding the recognition of Anti-Treaty supporters' contribution to the War of Independence. manuscript 24 by 19cm., 9.5 by 7.5in. Provenance: Hugh Kennedy; thence by descent Interesting letter in which Cosgrave advises Kennedy on the need to include anti-Treaty supporters in a proposed scheme to recognise those who gave service to the infant State prior to 1922. A page and a quarter of A4 handwritten on the notepaper from the President's Office. Cosgrave does not support Kennedy's harder line: To do what you say as a Government would confirm our commendation to those who helped in the past and were in favour of the Treaty. That would be scarcely fair in the case of a large number who helped generously, however misguided their judgement was subsequently…….
