1943 Edward Hempel (1887-1972) German Ambassador to Ireland 1937-1945, inscribed calling card. manuscript on printed card 6 by 9cm., 2.5 by 3.7in. printed card "Edward Hempel Deutscher Gesandter Dublin", inscribed in ink "and Frau Hempel with all their very best wishes for 1943!" During his time in Dublin Hempel ignored Ireland's neutrality and his embassy sent thousands of messages by telegraph and radio to Berlin, relaying weather conditions, military positions and is even credited with hampering the Allied landings at Arnhem. The most publicised event of his career was Taoiseach Éamon de Valera and President Douglas Hyde's visits to him to express their official condolences on the death of Adolf Hitler.
