Walter Benington George Bernard Shaw - Four Portraits. Sepia prints, framed (4) 22 .5 by 19cm. 2 or 29 x 19cm. (2), 9 by 7.5in. (2) or 11.5 by 9in. All four images show the head and shoulders of Shaw from different angles. The two smaller prints are signed by the photographer in the mount. Benington shows his portraiture skills by bringing out the intelligence, wisdom and sensitivity of his sitter. He was a noted pictorialist photographer, who also took the famous photographs of Henri Gaudier- Brzeska in his studio and of Epstein bashing away at his "Maternity". The National Portrait Gallery has fourteen portraits by Benington in its collection but not these studies.
