MacManus, Anna (Ethna Carbery), Fox, C. Milligan & MacCathmaoil, Seaghan (John Campbell). SONGS FROM "THE FOUR WINDS OF EIRINN", c. 1906M.H. Gill & Sons, James Duffy, 6 Booklets, 8pp each 18 by 17cm., 7 by 6.5in. A series of six small 4to. booklets 8pp each, published circa 1906, each with a fine characteristic colour-printed illustration by Campbell, a single poem by Anna MacManus, and an accompanying page of Music. Each booklet with stiff cream wrappers, titled in red and black and serrated edges, all held together with a piece of ribbon, nice set of this very attractive Celtic Revival production. Campbell, from Belfast, was an active participant in the Ulster Literary Theatre circle, both as a designer and actor. He was a very competent illustrator with a very individual style and contributed much black and white work to Gaelic League, Literary Revival and similar publications. This, probably his most attractive work, is very little known and is not recorded by John Hewitt in his section on Campbell in his "Art in Ulster". The artist himself however, thought very highly of the work and illustrations were shown at the Oireachtas Art Exhibition in 1906. Shortly after this, in 191, Campbell emigrated to the U.S.A.
