Suite of Six American Renaissance Revival Ebonized and Giltwood Chairs, third quarter 19th century, in the Neo-Grec taste, each with a padded back surmounted by a giltwood shield and scroll-carved crest, joined by downswept arms to the padded seat, raised on acanthine-carved, fluted and tapering legs ending in toupie feet on casters, the whole with incised gilt accents, h. 38".
Condition reportSuite of Six American Renaissance Revival Ebonized and Giltwood Chairs: In "as found" condition. The ebonized and gilded elements appear to be original and untouched on each example. There are losses to the gilding and gesso on the crests of 3 chairs and also similar gilt loss to the legs on all. One crest is lacking its dowels to hold it in place. Scattered gilt loss to the foliate leaf carving on the shoulders of 2 chairs. One chair has losses to the palinette carving on the front apron. All are sturdy and show no repairs. The fabric is worn and soiled. The springs appear tight, but may need rewebbing.
