Civil War REBEL STEAMER book

K-47 - "THE CHASE OF THE REBEL STEAMER OF WAR ORETO…". 1862 publication concerning the circumstances, reports, recommendations, statements of officers present and disposition of a controversial Navy happening. Commander George Henry Preble, the commander of the U.S.S.S. Oneida was dismissed from the Navy for "allowing the Rebel armed steamer Oreto to run the blockade" off of Mobile. The ensuing response brought forth a number of dignitaries, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who came to Preble's defense. The published compiled report established a precedent of civilian influence on military decisions, as well as re-examining the method of carrying forth military procedures.
