K-49 - Interesting 1870's "Justice Dockett" ledger from the State of Kentucky which includes Confederate "Orphan Brigade" material. Many pages have been used as an album to include calling cards, newspaper articles, political handbills, newspaper printed photos, etc.. The most interesting material includes: (1) Blue silk "8th Reunion, 1st Kentucky Orphan Brigade C.S.A., Louisville, KY Sept. 18, 1889…" ribbon. (2) Ribbon - "Orphan Brigade Reunion, Louisville, June 14, 1905" - with Confederate flags. (3) Ribbon - "Orphan Brigade C.S.A. 30th Reunion 51st Year at Louisville, KY. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, ….." (tattered bottom). (4) Ribbon - "LOUISVILLE Orphan Brigade 28th REUNION 1911".(5) Ribbon - "ORPHAN BRIGADE C.S.A. 29TH Reunion 50th Year AT LOUISVILLE, KY. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1912." (6) Ribbon - "KY. DIV. U.C.V." (7) Ribbon - "KY. COMMERCIAL TRAVELERS". (8) Handwritten letter "From the Head Quarters, 5th KY Regiment - Dalton, Georgia". Dated 17 March 1864. N. J. Thompson a surgeon stated that "Sargt. WL Jeff of Comp. C. 4th KY. Regt…" was admitted to Academy Hospital with a "…gunshot wound of the head…and found the skull fractured…I removed the dead portion of the bone…" (9) 3 1/2" x 5 3/4" swatch of Confederate uniform fabric. (10) Newspaper articles of the "Orphan Brigade" and printed photos of Confederate leaders. (11) Invitation card to attend the 1907 reunion of the Orphan Brigade - has Confederate flags and portraits of six Confederate leaders. (12) Newspaper roll of the names of all the casualties of the Orphan Brigade. (13) Many typed dispositions of requests for compensation by ex-Confederate soldiers for property confiscated at the end of the Civil War. Lists the names, units, items lost (including weapons, horses, saddles, blankets, etc….), witnesses, etc… Also numerous handwritten entries in ledger of the same requests for compensation. (14) Several pages of names of ex-soldiers and their units under the heading of "Confederate House" which probably refers to them being residents of a Confederate home. An interesting primary source of information on a Confederate unit which suffered 95% casualties during the Civil War. Ledger is old and worn - but above ribbons/fabric/typed sheets are generally in very good condition. III.....$750.00
