U.S. WWI 94th Aero Squadron photos

L-21 - Important WWI photo grouping of the famed U.S. 94th Aero Squadron. Includes member Lt. Alan F. Winslow, recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. Winslow and Lt. Doulgas Campbell had the distinction of claming the first and second aerial victories by the U.S. Air Service in WWI. Lot includes: (1) Photo album with comrades in training - one is named to "O.J", another to "Jay" (probably Oscar J. Gude), individual 4 1/2" x 6 3/4" photos of subjects in cockpit, aerial views of Miami, primitive airfield and hanger, French base, aircraft with "hat in the ring" insignia, mechanics; signed photos of pilots "T. Mooney", "Philip D. Rade", Elison McKeown and three photos of Winslow sitting on his first downed German aircraft; visit of Gen. Pershing, floral arrangements/wake, photo - Lt. Kurtz and Maj. Lufbery, photos of "aces" Capt. Douglas Campbell (six victories) and Capt. Edward V. Rickenbacher (25 victories), etc. A total of 81 photos. (2) Eighteen, mostly larger, photos mounted on an 18 1/8" x 27 7/8" hardstock sheet. Includes: several different photos of Winslow near his aircraft - one signed, Campbell holding the Maxim and belt of cartridges from his first claimed Fokker, views of 94th Squadron aircraft, signed photo "To Jay with my Compliments de la - Captain Hall" with Hall next to his plane (Hall previously was a member of the Lafayette Escardille) and several unidentified pilots. (3) Unidentified 7" x 9 1/4" squadron photo. Seated officer in center, holding a puppy mascot, is wearing embroidered wings, three ribbon bars and a Fourguerre. Officer to his right has U.S. Wings and a French Pilot's Badge. (4) "HANDS ACROSS THE SEA" - silk embroidered British/American postcard - with "R.M.S. ORDUNA". Reverse has "DETACHMENT FROM AVIATION SECTION - SIGNAL CORPS - U.S. ARMY" and a listing of members going to France. Includes: Roosevelt, Campbell, Coolidge, Green, Gude, Meissner, etc. (5) Mailed envelope addressed to "Monsiur O. J. Gude Jr. - St. Pursuit Group - U.S. Air Service" and "R. Borgo Neuschateau". "93rd Aero Sqdr. - 3rd Pursuit Groupe" has been added in red ink. Ink stamped by the U.S. Censor and with "CLUB LAFAYETTE". Corner of envelope is torn but most of postmarked remains "TRESSOR…27-9-18". (Oscar Gude is listed on the above ship's postcard). (6) Xerox copies of New York Times articles: (A) "WINSLOW DESCRIBES THRILLING AIR FILGHT" from the June 16, 1918 edition. (B) "AMERICAN AIRMAN KILLED" - Winslow's death from the August 14, 1918 edition. A historical WWI aviation collection worthy of further study. II......$1,000.00
