L-27 - Lot of 12 original 8" x 10" photos of the ceremonies surrounding the 1921 burial of the "Unknown Soldier". Includes: arrival of the body of the "Unknown Soldier" on the U.S.S. Olympia (Dewey's flagship in the Spanish-American War) and Marine Honor Guard, President Harding placing a Congressional Medal of Honor on the flag draped coffin, laying in state, leaving the Capital, Chief Plenty Oos of the Crow Tribe who honored the "Unknown Soldier" with a "coup stick" and war bonnet, Harding and Gen. Pershing, the funeral procession to Arlington Cemetery, CMH recipient honorary pallbearers and floral tributes from countries of the British Empire. Accompanying the above is a 209-page handwritten letter by a nurse assigned to Walter Reed Hospital, who witnessed and presents and unbelievable account of the above proceedings. As if writing a novel, Florence Hight describes her daily routine, plans for attending the ceremonies honoring the "Unknown Soldier", the arrival, the environment with people/description of crowds, a precise visual explanation of the viewing - with floral arrangements, a hand-drawn map, the history of the selection of the "Unknown Soldier", minute details of the dignitaries and funeral procession, view of Chief Plenty Oos and meaning of his gifts, marching bands, CMH recipients as honorary pallbearers, President Harding's address ending with the Lord's Prayer, speeches by Marshall Foch and the Polish representative, attending ceremonies at the Pan-American Building and a precise description of events with drawings, a magnificent written narrative exhibiting emotion, a command of the language and ability to present a verbal picture.
