(2) works, pencil on paper; the first, "Newports (sic) News, Va.," 3.25 x 5 in., depicts a Union campsite behind earthworks,' signed "By F. A. Silva - Civil War time" below; the second, "Yorktown, Va.," 3.75 x 4.75 in., shows a colonial house, inscribed, "By F. A. Silva - during Civil War, when he was in service." A face and architectural sketches are en verso. Francis Augustus Silva, a Hudson River School painter, served as a junior officer in Co. "K", 9th New York Volunteers (Hawkins Zouaves). These scenes were likely sketched during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862.
