A RUSSIAN ICON: The New Testament Trinity, 18th century. Here Christ (left) and God the Father (right) are seen enthroned atop clouds and Seraphim. Between them an orb representing the Cosmos, and with the Implements of the Passion. Above them, a dove signifying the Holy Spirit. The halo of Christ with the typical cross-form whereas the halo of God the Father exhibits an eight-pointed star, symbolizing the six days of creation, the seventh day God rested, and the eighth day - the Day of Eternity. While this Trinity pattern was officially unacceptable, it was nonetheless very common amongst both the state Church believers as well as the Old Believers. The carved shaped wood panel on which this icon is executed suggested that it may at one time been part of a traveling icon triptych, most likely the central panel. 6.25 inches x 4.6 inches (15.5 x 12 cm).
