Attractive Oval Pastel Portrait of Lt. Col. Stephen Kemble (1740-1827), Deputy Adjutant General of the British Army in North America, 1772-1779, in British military dress, with his powdered hair clubbed, presented in a period oval giltwood frame in the neoclassical taste and glazed, the pastel now on a canvas support, the reverse of the frame with an old handwritten label identifying the subject and his rank, h. 20-1/2", w. 17-1/2". Kemble's journals give one of the best records of the War for Independence as seen through the eyes of the redcoats.
