Description
Marie Bruner Burt Haines (American, 1884-1979). "Still Life with Foot Sculpture". Pastel on paper. c1958. Signed "Marie H. Burt" in pastel, lower left. Burt was Haines's married name. Cream wove paper. 23 1/2 x 18 1/2 in. (597 x 470 mm). Partially completed pastel portrait, verso. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Bennington Museum, Bennington, Vermont. Three Haines oil paintings recently sold at Skinner's (Boston) on September 11, 2009, for $3,081, $2,133, and $1,896, respectively. A thoroughly accomplished painter, her artistic training was impeccable: Cincinnati Art Academy; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Art Students League; National Academy of Design; Art Institute of Chicago. In the 1920s she was an early member of the Taos, New Mexico art colony. She is especially well known for her pastel portraits of children. [23491]
