Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1869 - 1959). "Vintage Frank Lloyd Wright/Taliesin Designed Carpet from the Arizona Biltmore Hotel [01 1/2 "tiles"] [The integral repeating design of the carpet consists of four green "squares" with an "arrow" through the middle of each square, pointing to the "center." Each one of the "squares" is approximately 27" square and four of them make the complete design, a "tile." The tile dimension is approximately 54" square (4 ½ feet x 4 ½ feet). Because of the way the carpet was manufactured, and then installed at the Biltmore, the largest single piece of carpet is approximately 9' x 18'. Larger sizes in the lots in this auction have been joined together, and are noted as such]". Textile. Approximate size: 54" x 81" (4 1/2' x 6 3/4') horizontal. This carpet size is perfect for a wall hanging. It is also very impressive framed. The carpet has been professionally cleaned and bordered. Very good condition, with no rips, tears, holes, patches, stains, color bleeding, etc. Provenance: Arizona Biltmore Hotel, Phoenix, Arizona. Built in 1929 and known throughout the world as the "Jewel of the Desert," the Biltmore resort was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and his former student, Albert Chase MacArthur. Mr. Wright's carpet design was sent to the prestigious Wilton Carpet Manufacturing Company in Axminster, England, which used only the highest quality 100% wool available in its manufacture. In 1932 the carpet was installed throughout the hotel as an integral part of the overall interior design (please see image of the carpet in place). On June 21st, 1973, a tragic fire led to the replacement of all the carpeting throughout the resort, of which our example is part.
