Lanier Meaders jar, candle holder
Description
candle holder with dark alkaline glaze, 3 in.; jar with medium alkaline glaze and incised rings at shoulder, "2" inscribed below one lug handle, 11-1/2 in., both inscribed on base "Lanier Meaders" (White County, Georgia, 1917-1998). Excellent condition. Provenance: John Burrison Collection. Exhibited: Candle holder: "The Meaders Family at Mossy Creek", Georgia State University Art Gallery, 1976, catalog No. 57; see attached information. John Burrison's notes indicate that Lanier recalled that his father, Cheever, made some of these; Lanier made a later group for this exhibit. ** Jar: John Burrison's notes indicate it is one of an experimental group of alkaline glazed pieces with salt added to the kiln. The salt did not affect the appearance so Lanier quit doing it.
