Description
Ca. 1st century B.C – 1st century A.D. molded terracotta, carved in low relief, with satyrs dancing as they crush grapes to make wine. On the right, with a basket of grapes, is their leader Silenos, a Roman, probably by Greek artists. Remains of original pigment. Custom mount. 17-1/2"W x 12"H x 1-1/4"D. Published in the book, Wine Appreciation and Abuse in Ancient Greece, by Kons. I. Fallerios. An important piece, one of only a small handful known to exist, with one nearly-identical example on display at the Houston Museum of Art.
