After Betrand, Oil on Canvas; "Mort de Virginie"

Description
"The Death of Virginia." Oil painting on canvas after the original by Jean-Baptiste Bertrand (French, 1823-1887). Depicting the death of Virginia, one of the ill-fated sweethearts described in the 1787 French novel by Bernardin de St. Pierre, "Paul et Virginie". The novel centers around a shipwreck, in which Virginie must shed her clothes in order to be rescued. She refuses and drowns. Painting shows her washed up on a rock with a large wave in the background and a bird flying overhead. Very intricately detailed and beautiful painting. 20" H x 46" W; unsigned. Faceplate attached to front reads; "Mort de Virginie (After) Bertrand". 1" tear to center where her bottom leg is and 3" scratch in UL. Restoration to about 10% of the painting, mainly in and below dress area with some to where her head lies. One small area on her forehead of restoration; no where else on face. Craquelure throughout.
