Set of Wedgwood "Georgia Historical Plates"
Description
Complete Set of Wedgwood "Georgia Historical Plates", designed in 1932 by Annie Louise Irwin, the twelve pottery plates each with a different underglaze rose transfer-printed design of a noted Georgia historical event, person or building within a border of cotton, peaches, Cherokee roses and long-leaf pine, the reverse of each with a full description of the subject depicted along with the Wedgwood marks, dia. 10-1/2". These plates were commissioned by the Transylvania Club of Sandersville, Georgia, to commemorate the Georgia bicentennial (1733-1933). In 1974 then-governor Jimmy Carter signed state legislation naming them the official historical plates of Georgia. Sets are included in the collections of the White House, Buckingham Palace and, of course, both the Georgia Governor's Mansion and State Capitol.
