Description
cellaret, walnut with yellow pine secondary, single-board walnut top with astragal line inlay and molded edge and light wood beading, blind-dovetail box with original carrying handles, separate frame with single dovetailed drawer with light wood beading and original brass pull, straight legs with H stretcher, attributed to Micajah Wilkes, Roanoke River Basin, North Carolina, 1780-1795, 36 x 20-1/2 x 15-1/4 in. Excellent condition, old refinishing with mellow brown color, back of lid with crack and early screw repairs, minor patch at lock, lacking bottle dividers, minor polish residue at brasses, wear and stains consistent with age and use. Provenance: Frank L. Horton Collection, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Cabinetmaker Micajah Wilkes married the younger sister of William Seay, the "WH" cabinetmaker.
