shirred rug, central 12-pointed snowflake motifs within a multi-floral wreath, "AUGUSTINE W. PHILLIPS" stitched at bottom on dark ground, wool on linen, sewn to fabric-covered stretcher, board backing, probably Maine, early to mid 19th century, 54-1/2 x 63 in. Colors bright, some fading, surface wear, scattered repairs, not examined under backing. Provenance: Edgar and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch, Sotheby's; H-2, Pokety Farms, October 1980; Sotheby's, January 30, 1993, lot 868; American Hurrah Antiques, New York City, 1993.
