1934, 2 Oakland Speedway Stock Car Race Programs
Description
The Oakland Speedway was built in 1931 as a one-mile, banked dirt oval track on the site of what is now Bayfair Mall in San Leandro, California and it ultimately became knows as the “fastest dirt track in the nation”. AAA National Championship races of Indy cars were hosted at the track from 1931 until 1936, when the AAA pulled out of the West Coast. The track continued to operate until its closure in 1941, featuring racing of roadsters and motorcycles, as well as Big Cars, stock cars, and midgets. The 12 page programs included in this lot were for the May 6, 1934 250 mile race of 20 cars of "American manufacture in regular production as advertised, catalogued and sold through regular dealers.."" ala stock cars! The programs are printed in black, white and red and list the drivers and their cars and feature advertisement by event sponsors such as Gilmore, Ford, Firestone, etc. One program is in virtually as new condition, the other has a slight bend and minor faults to the front cover. Formerly from the personal collection of Cliff Henderson, one of the early organizers of the National Air Races and President of the Pacific Speedway Association.
