Rare and Important 18th c. English Breakfront Bookcase with Provenance. Constructed of Mahogany with Oak Secondary. Finish is old yet not original and somewhat sun faded. Most of the 60 individual glass panes appear to be original. Various restorations over the last 250 years include additional structural supports on top. Back panels have been replaced. Old small crack repaired at left side. Small chip missing from molding on upper right corner appx 2" l x 1/2"t. Plaque mounted on left side reads: "This Book Case belonged originally to the Rev. W.S.Powell L.T.P. Master of St.Johns College, Cambridge. It was bequeathed by him to the Revd. Willm Arnold L.T.P. of St.Johns College, Cambridge Sub-preceptor to the two Princes-afterward- George IV and the Duke of York And by him bequeathed to his friend Revd. Thomas Drake D.D.
