Auction details |
A 42" presentation gilt wood and reverse painted glass banjo timepiece. Two reeded front panels house two fine reverse painted glass tablets, one showing "The Boston State House". The painted dial, now restored, bears the signature "A. Willard", and within a weight driven timepiece clock movement. While the attribution of Aaron Willard may be held doubtful there are examples of this clock maker making banjos showing the Boston State House (see Foley, pp 47 and 194). The Boston State House was designed by Charles Bullfinch and built between 1795 and 1798.
Condition reportUnless otherwise stated the condition of the mechanisms of these clocks is good, but that does not mean they run or do not need repairs. There is no guarantee of either the mechanical performance of clocks nor the completeness and originality of their parts and components. In most cases we have not removed the dials from these clocks, and have not checked inside for manufacturer’s or maker’s names for attribution.
