19th C. MICROMOSAIC PLAQUE OF A LION ATTACKING A HOU

The actual mosaic image size being 9.25 x 14 inches. An applied inscription above the image, on the slate mount, reads "Mosaic Italia" and below is a date of 1760 in Roman numerals. These appear to be "painted" or enamelled. Condition: good throughout with two areas of extremely minor tile loss. Currently mounted in a copper strap mount that shows from the front as half round tabs evenly spaced along the border. The image is most likely based on a painting or print by Austrian artist Wenzel Peter (1745-1829). Many instances of mosaicists basing their works on Peter's animal paintings have been documented.
