Rookwood Iris Glaze factory lamp, Schmidt, 1904
Description
Rare and important Iris glaze oil lamp made by Rookwood in 1904 and exhibited in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, also in 1904. Decorated by Carl Schmidt, the lamp features several larger than life irises on a teal ground done with Mr. Schmidt's amazing attention to detail. The lamp features an original ceramic cap through which are fitted the copper font and the burner mechanism. Marks include the Rookwood logo and date, shape number and the impressed monogram of the artist. Also present is an original Rookwood paper label from the 1904 LPE which in itself is quite rare. The lamp was converted to electric sometime in its life and there is now a 1/4 inch hole in the oil font. Someone also ground a 1/4 inch channel through the foot ring to accommodate the cord. This has been professionally repaired. Height is 13 1/2 inches.
