Frank Duveneck (Cincinnati, OH, 1848-1919), "Village Scene", 14 1/2" X 12", oil on canvas laid on board. Signed lower left with monogram. One of the most influential American realists of the 19th Century and the best known of Cincinnati's painters. Born in Covington, KY, Frank Duveneck had the birth name of Frank Decker. Although, Frank Duveneck had little formal education in his home town of Covington, KY, he displayed a precociousness for painting. He began studying in Munich in 1870. During the 1870s & 1880s American artists in Munich experimented with a new style of realism featuring dashing brushwork of quickly applied blocks of color, omitting the careful blending of traditional methods. Duveneck was uniquely suited to this new style, both because of his precocious skill with the brush and his temperament. Except for his return to Cincinnati in 1874-1875, he lived and painted in Munich, Venice, Florence, & Paris until 1888 when his wife, Elizabeth Booth Duveneck died. In 1877, he painted with William Chase & Twachtman in Venice and by 1879 he had settled in Florence as a highly influential teacher whose most ardent American students became know as the "Duveneck Boys". Upon his return to America in 1888, he taught briefly in Boston and Cincinnati. In 1900, he joined the faculty of the Cincinnati Art Academy and became its dean in 1905. He bequeathed his art collection to the Cincinnati Art Museum. He exhibited all over the world. Guaranteed to be an original Frank Duveneck painting. Fine condition.
