Ref. 5000, along with its successor, Ref. 5026, presents a distinctive variation of the traditional time owing to its small seconds dial placed at 4:30. During its two decades or so (from 1990) in Patek Philippe's catalogue, this design was made in a great variety of combinations, including cases in platinum, three colors of gold, and cream; black, blue, silver or anthracite dials, and sunburst as well as glazed finish.

The caliber 240 PS was introduced by Patek in 1977.
