Jeffrey Amherst Letter Signed

JEFFREY AMHERST, Commander in Chief of North America; Governor General of British North America.
Letter Signed “Amherst” as Commander in Chief of the British army, April 20, 1794, St. James’s Square, 8.25” x 7.5,” Choice Very Fine. Normal folds and typical light tone. To an unidentified petitioner:
“I have the honour of your Letter of the 17th instant in favour of your Nephew Mr. Balfour Ensign in a Fencible Regiment, but as I do not know in what Regiment he is I beg the favour of you to acquaint me, that I may make enquiry about him, though I cannot make any promise.”
Amherst captured Louisbourg from the French in 1758 and was appointed Governor-General of British North American. In 1763, he was recalled to England for his failure to deal properly with Pontiac’s uprising. When the American Revolution broke out, he refused to return to North America to lead troops against the Colonists. He remained in England and was made Commander-in-Chief of British home defenses in 1778. In 1796 he was made field marshal.
