General “Beast” Butler

BENJAMIN “BEAST” BUTLER, Union General.
Partially Printed Letter Signed, “Benj. Butler,” in brown ink, August 8, 1870, Bayview, 2 pages, measuring 10.25” x 8”, Choice Very Fine. The content of the letter concerns Butler informing a Col. Ludeorick that he has been both nominated and appointed the Acting Chaplain for the Southwestern Branch of Milwaukee. What is interesting to note is that Butler, as President of the Branch, has summarily fired the present Chaplain, and wants the new fellow to report as soon as possible and inform the present Chaplain he has been replaced. Some slight staining and a label has been removed from the upper right-hand corner of the second page, not affecting the text.
