General Custer Calls For Punishment of Soldiers Responsible For Killing Cows and Damaging Property (GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER). Manuscript Document Secretarially Signed, “G.A. Custer” as Major General Commanding, in brown ink on fine-laid, lined paper, September 4, 1865, “Headquarters Second Cavalry Brigade”, 9.75” x 7.75”, 3 pages, Choice Very Fine. Custer issued this General Order No. 5, after soldiers slaughtered a number of cows belonging to a Dr. Peebles. They believed he was a Confederate, however, Custer states he “is probably the most thorough Union man in this State”. A search was made looking for the items that were also stolen from the property, so that the men responsible would be punished. This document was written to Colonel Thompson, informing him that none of his men were accused of the crime, and that he should be proud he has such a strong hold over his men. As an information document, this served as a message that unruly soldiers would not be tolerated, and that they would be punished to the fullest extent possible. Minor damp staining, with two holes on the left hand side made originally for filing purposes; overall in wonderful condition. A document written by Custer in such amazing condition, is rarely seen!!
