Elephant Tokens
(1694) London Elephant Halfpenny Token, GOD PRESERVE LONDON, Thick Planchet, Very Fine. Breen 186. Choice, glossy brown surfaces on the reverse, despite moderate wear on both sides. A minor, natural lamination flaw runs diagonally across the reverse, connecting the D of GOD with the V of PRESERVE. For type purposes, this is an excellent piece. The elephant motif is one of the most popular of all the Colonial coins; why it was placed on the coin to begin with is an enigma. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
