Jim Dine was born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at the University of Cincinnati and received a BFA from Ohio University in 1957. He currently lives and works in New York. When Jim Dine arrived to New York it coincided with the beginnings of the Pop Art movement and the "Happenings" in which he took part. Like the Pop artists Dine is interested in a concrete and recognizable subject matter that is derived from the objects and values of popular culture. However, unlike the Pop artists, Dine's process of transforming the observable and material world is varied and does not parody commercial reproduction techniques. His recurrent themes of hearts, flowers, birds, tools and portraits not only hold rich personal expression but have become cultural icons. Dine has had a creative printmaking career. He has a history of 40 years as a painter, sculptor, printmaker and photographer with many accomplishments and worldwide recognition. Dine had many one person exhibitions across the world and his works are included in collections of leading museums. These days, Dine is having a major exhibition of his drawings at the National Gallery art, Washington DC.
The flowers image by Dine are a striking and rare hand colored print, one of Dine's finest prints. It was published by Pace Prints. Botanical elements can be found in Dine's work as early as 1969 when he collaged photographic illustrations from seeds onto his lithographs.
His affection of flowers and love of nature began during the years he spent in Vermont since the early 1970's. Dine is concerned in conveying the vibrant energy of living organisms. Most of his flowers images are on paper, either as drawings or print, rather than on canvas, but in their freedom they relate more to the tradition of flower painting than to the botanical illustration.
This work appears in the Catalogue Raisonne 1985-2000 of Jim Dine (published by Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2001), plate 127.3.
