Robert Wood is the most prolific painter of American landscapes. The English born Wood had a father who was a Victorian painter, and his art was encourage at an early age. He studied painting in nearby Folkstone. He emigrated to America, where traveled as a hobo, hopping freight cars and selling paintings. He moved around to different parts of the country, from Illinois to Ohio to Texas to California. His work became well recognized. The American Express Company commissioned him to paint a series of six paintings that would be produced as prints for their cardholders, all portraying National Parks. Today his work is well loved and collected widely.
