Description
Late Period, 600-300 B.C. Upper half of mummy coffin carved out of a single, large cedar tree. Very finely detailed, with expressive smile (almost New Kingdom in style), detailed ears and eyebrows. Top of head was separate piece now missing, with peg still visible where the piece would have attached. Very rare that is is made of cedar, 98% are sycamore. Cedar had to be brought in the Lebanon (about a thousand miles away - think "Cedars of Lebanon" from the Bible), and this would have been a huge tree they brought just to carve this one coffin. Many of the sycamore coffins were painted red to imitate cedar, and supposedly fool the Gods into thinking this mummy/person was more important than they were. That's why you see so many rectangle Middle Kingdom coffins painted red, because they were trying to make them look like they were made from cedar. By comparison, sycamore trees are smaller, so they would peg the planks together, fill in with plaster, and paint them red to look like one big piece of cedar. 21"H.
