AN INTERESTING GROUP OF MEDALS, AUTOGRAPHS, PHOTOS AND JOURNALS RELATED TO THE RESCUE OF THE IMPERIAL RUSSIAN FAMILY, CIRCA 1918. Comprised of material from Commander Alun Jones, British Royal Navy who served aboard the H.M.S Marlborough. In 1919, during the Russian Civil War the Marlborough was on duty in the Black Sea. On orders of King George V, the ship rescued his aunt, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna (mother of Tsar Nicholas II) and other members of the Russian Imperial Family, including Grand Duke Nicholas and Prince Felix Yusupov. Group consists of Commander Jones' Midshipman's Journal with typical entries, and drawings covering the period of December 1918 to August 1919. The unused rear portion with 40 mounted photographs depicting scenes of Constantinople and Malta two group photos of the officers of the Marlborough and other related scenes. Group also includes Jones' pocket diary which contains the autographs of the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna dated April 1919 followed by Xenia Alexandrovna inscribed on board the Marlborough (illustrated above), and others. Diary also includes a multitude of entries related to the Imperial Russian family such as one dated Monday April 7th, "Proceeded to take on Royal refugees including about 10 women and the same number of men. Among the women are the Dowager Empress, who is very like Queen Alexandra, also Princess Zenia, and other princesses. The men include the Grand Duke Nicholas, the Admiral of the Black Sea… a small baby also the man who killed Rasputin." Group further includes shipboard photographs of the above mentioned Royal family members (as illustrated). Additionally lot includes Jones' WWI British War and Victory medals named to Jones, as well as Jones WWII War and Service medals (unnamed as issued) and his African and Italy Stars. Together with cape clasp, miniature medals and ribbon bar and four imperial Russian uniform buttons. A unique and important record of an operation to rescue members of the Imperial Russian Royal family.
