Description
this wonderful sample book opens a window on German wooden toy making in the third quarter of the 19th century; in 34 double page spreads (19" x 15") hand colored lithographed images depict a surprising variety of toys - many in multiple sizes suggesting that all items pictured are exactly sized as was common in such "hand made" sample books both in America and Germany during this period which were made to display a maker's line to wholesalers and retailers; many of the toys pictured are so-called "white wear" that is unpainted wood with only minor color embellishment while others are brightly hand painted in brilliant colors - some toys appear in both styles; most colorful of all is a handsome rocking horse printed as a fold-out centerfold measuring 34" x 24.5" which has been taken out of the book and beautifully framed; sample books of this sort from this period are exceeding rare and seldom come on the market; offered with a matted copy of the firms 1890 "Preis-Courant" - price list
