Extraordinary English Butcher Shop
Description
A very large 19th century butcher's shop comprised of a pair of two-story Georgian buildings with richly detailed architectural features joined by a single-story arcade with numerous decorative ornaments including three prominent gilt royal warrants, numerous flags from the British Isles, and several printed signs reading "Merry Christmas" and "God Save the Queen" and "Compliments of the Season", pristine mica coating on the building facades add to the holiday spirit. Stocked with almost 200 individual carved and painted cuts of pork, beef, lamb, and assorted poultry and sausages, many decorated with sprigs of holly, 3 stout butchers with honing tools, butcher blocks and assorted tools. Incredible detail throughout, down to the sawdust on the floor. Original glassed-front hardwood case features decorative wallpaper cornice, original iron hangers on the sides. This shop was one of the highlights of the Mary Merritt Doll Museum where in entranced visitors form the early 1960's until October 2006 when it was purchased for the Old Salem Toy Museum. After purchasing this marvel Mr. Gray invested in having the crudely applied white overpaint removed from the surrounding case and bringing it back to the rich original wood surfaces - definitely a stunning improvement.
