Sensational Automaton of Sir John Franklin's Lost Expedition, Late 19th Century
Possibly by Roullet & Decamps, showing Franklin's icebound boat and three sailors (two articulated, one static), in sculpted papier-mâché-over-wood glacial landscape with micah-flecked finish, the going-barrel motor with chain-drive causing one crew member to defend himself with an ice-pick while a second clambers up a ladder pursued by a polar bear, height 18 x width 13 in. (46 x 33 cm), some papier-mâché losses. The English press began a century-long fascination with the mysterious fate of Franklin and his crew, when their 1845 expedition became icebound in the last un-navigated section of the Northwest Passage of the Canadian Arctic. Speculation revived when explorer John Rae discovered relics of the Franklin Expedition in 1854, leading to another search in 1859 and a scientific investigation in 1981. Included with the lot are a blown-glass model sailing ship under a dome and a copy of "Fatal Passage, The Story of John Rae, the Arctic Hero Time Forgot", Ken McGoogan (2001). - Fascinating historical subject, in superb working condition. Hersteller vermutlich Roullet & Decamps, mit einer Darstellung von Franklins im Eise gestrandetem Schiff. Mit 3 Seeleuten (zwei beweglich), in einer Eislandschaft aus Papiermaché auf Holz, Federwerk, ein Seemann verteidigt sich mit einem Eispickel, während ein zweiter eine Leiter hochklettert weil er von einem Eisbären verfolgt wird, 46 x 33 cm.
