Description
YUGO-LEF, magazine of LEF South. Yugo-LEF, nos. 1-4, Odessa, 1924, 12-16 pp. per issue, 24 x 16 cm. NEDOLYA, L., editor, and KIRSANOV, Semyon (1906-1972), key contributor. Bi-color covers with letterpress lettering and typographic designs on front and back; additional typographic designs are spread through the text. Designs: N. Danilov (he also wrote theater reviews for the magazine), and N. Sokolov (Odessa artist and book designer, not to be confused with the namesake posterist).
A rare complete run for 1924; even single issues of Yugo-LEF are difficult to come by. This short-lived magazine was published in 1924-25 by Southern region artists subscribing to the LEF doctrine. In running the magazine, its editor L. Nedolya heavily relied on the 19-year-old redaction secretary, future major Soviet poet, Semyon Kirsanov. In addition to contributing poetry, Kirsanov was also responsible for much of the advertising, and advertising Kirsanov-style provides for entertaining reading [MoMA 593].
