Photographer unknown. The HMS Iron Duke ; HMS Royal Adelaide in Plymouth. Late 1870s. 2 albumen prints. Each circa 16 x 24,2 cm. Each mounted to board (slightly soiled), annotated in ink below the images on the mounts. The first Iron Duke was a ten gun twin-screw armor plated battleship. She was originally called the Duke but to distinguish her from wooden ships with the same name she was nicknamed Iron Duke. The ship was launched at Pembroke in March 1870. In 1871 she became the Flagship of Commander-in-Chief China and became the first capital ship to use the Suez Canal. The HMS Royal Adelaide had 104 guns. - Slight fading, especially in edges, otherwise in very good condition.
