Born in New York, Emil Cadoo was one of the defining photographers of the 1960s. Cadoo's work ranged from quality photojournalism for Life magazine, to Beat generation portraiture, to artistically ambitious and sexually ambiguous erotica. In May of 1960, Cadoo emigrated to Paris where as an African-American and as a homosexual he felt more at ease with fellow expatriates and he remained there until his death. Cadoo was also well known for his book covers and illustration and in 1963 he illustrated Henry Miller's novel "Sexus". His body of work includes photomontages of men's bodies, sculpture and plant life. The image offered here is from Cadoo's time in New York before he emigrated to Paris. Cadoo's photographs are in the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Centre George Pompidou Musee National d'Art Modern and the French Bibliotheque Nationale. - A few light surface abrasions, one handling mark in upper portion, otherwise in very good condition.
