Designer & Manufacturer: Retailed by Sanborns
Markings: Sanborns, Sterling, Mexico Country of Origin & Materials: Mexico; sterling silver, amethyst quartz Additional Information & Circa: Sanborns was founded in downtown Mexico City by two brothers from California in 1903 as a pharmacy. By the 1920s, it had expanded into an important and fashionable store with several branches, including the famous 18th Century palace, the so-called House of Tiles in which Sanborns hired Social Realist painter Jose Clemente Orozco to create a major mural. During the heyday of Mexican modern silver design (1930s-40s), Sanborns commissioned pieces from important studios in Taxco and elsewhere, impressing the retailer's name on the pieces instead of that of the artist or studio. Whether this piece was designed by Spratling, one of his apprentices or some other studio, it does show his influence in the mix of modern aesthetics with traditional symbols; Circa 1940. Dimensions: 1.5"H, 4.25"Dia. Condition reportvery good, minor ding(s) on interior
