Item Details
Description
Albumen cabinet card or boudoir photograph of Creede, Colorado, showing five men, a woman, and three children outside the I.X.L. Short Order House (note the toy train set behind the little boys). Labeled en verso "Views of Creede and Vicinity, Charles Goodman, Photographer, Amethyst P.O. Colorado 1892." Condition: spot of wear at upper left hand side, speck to upper right hand side, some wear to gilt edges of card, light grime. 7 7/8' x 5". Creede was one of Colorado's most notorious early mining towns. Several gambling house owners took refuge there when a reform movement swept Denver, and Robert Newton "Bob" Ford fled there after assassinating Jesse James. Ford was shot to death in Creede the same year this photograph was taken. Three days before Ford's death, a fire destroyed most of the Creede business district. I.X.L. refers to the I.X.L. Mining Company.
