Description
Grouping of late 19th/early 20th century New York City etchings by Walworth Stilson (American, 1874-1962). 1st item: Brooklyn bridge subject on Japan paper. Titled and signed in pencil "99. A Rainy Sunday Under Brooklyn Bridge- by Walworth Stilson" lower left. Sight: 8" H X 11 3/4" W. Very good condition, with minor foxing and fold lines. 2nd item: Signed on inverse in pencil lower left "129. W.W.Stilson Etching." Sight: 3" H X 5 1/2" W. Very good condition. 3rd item: Etching on Japan paper. Titled in pencil in etching and lower middle "12. Moonlight on Broadway". Sight: 7 1/2" H X 2 1/2 " W. Very good condition, with fold lines. 4th item: Japan paper etching, Titled "31. Impression no. 15 Early Spring in Central Park", lower left, Artist's signature in etching and below lower right, both in pencil. Sight: 7" H X 5" W. Overall very good condition with clean image and browning and fold lines to margin. 5th item: Japan paper etching. Titled "143. Rooftop view of N.Y. street" lower left, and signed by artist lower right of etching, in pencil. Sight: 5" H x 3 1/3" W. Overall very good condition with some browning to margin. 6th item: Numbered "102" in lower left of page, and signed by artist beneath lower right corner of etching in pencil. "Copyright 1908 by Walworth Stilson" and "Walworth Stilson" in etching. Excellent condition. Sight: 8 1/2 " H X 6 1/2" W. 7th item: On Japan paper. Titled "23. A Harlem Landmark" lower left, and by artist below lower right corner of etching in pencil. Overall very good condition with fold lines. Sight: 5 1/2" H X 4" W. 8th item: Titled "135. Fifth Avenue" in pencil, lower left. Artist name in etching. Excellent condition. Sight: 10" H X 7" W. 9th item: Titled "11. Central park museum" on card stock lower left, signed by artist under lower corner of etching, both in pencil. Excellent condition. Sight: 7" H X 5" W. 10th item: Etching on Japan paper adhered to card stock at four corners. Japan paper adhered to card stock at corners. Titled on inverse of card stock "Lips Sol H. Zurich 1758-1817" and by artist in pencil on lower right of etching. Overall very good condition with some browning to margin. Sight: 7" H X 5" W. Note - Litchfield County, Connecticut artist, Walworth Stilson (1874-1962) attended the Detroit School of Art, studying under listed artist, John Ward Dunsmore. Completed art studies at the Detroit Academy, listed artist Joseph W. Gies was his instructor. Art career started in NYC at the "Illustrated American". He also illustrated for St. Nicholas Magazine and the Metropolitan Magazine of New York. Illustrated books include "Our Fern and Their Haunts" by Willard N. Chute and "The Writers of Knickerbocker New York" by Hamilton Wright Mabie. An extensive biography of Stilson was done in a June 1925 article of the Bridgeport Life Newspaper of Bridgeport, Connecticut reviewing Stilson’s artistic, poetic, and musical genius. Examples of Stilson’s work are in the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery and The New Milford Historical Society of Connecticut.
