Item Details
Description
A large Cypriot amphora dating to the Cypro-Archaic period, circa 750 - 600 B.C. This Iron Age vessel measures impressively at approximately 14 3/4"T x 10 3/4"W, and has survived in remarkable, original condition. It exhibits an aesthetically pleasing, balanced form with handles on opposing sides. The bulbous body has a ring foot, and gives way to a more narrow neck with a lipped opening. It features black/brown and dull red geometric designs against a pinkish/buff surface. The lip of the opening displays a zig-zag pattern, while the body and neck display bands, lines and a variety of concentric circle patterns that were executed with masterful skill by the ancient artisan.

Condition
Intact with a small bit of ancient spalling damage on one lower side of the vessel (visible in the photos), which is now stable. The vessel remains in original condition with no detected repairs, restoration or repainting. There are minor chips and abrasions overall, and weathering to varying degrees over the surface. There are ample impressions of root marks overall, most visible over areas of painted decoration. Wear to the painted decoration, with more wear in some areas, speaks for the way the vessel was lying in burial- as such, one side exhibits more surface wear/damage than the balance of the piece since it laid on one side. There are also areas of mineral staining and deposits. The whitish deposits could be carefully brushed/cleaned off, if desired. The root marks and mineral deposits are hallmarks of the age and authenticity of this piece and have so far been left as-is.
