EXCEEDINGLY RARE & IMPRESSIVE 36", CIRCA 1850, CHINA DOLL. A most unusual and interesting china doll with molded and painted porcelain shoulderhead which is solid dome, and without the typical painted pate. There are sew holes at the center top and sides of head; has thickly poured porcelain with flesh-tone which is highly glazed; painted features with blue eyes, red and brown lid lines, tapered brown eyebrows with light brown undercoat, warm red, full and well-defined lips, dark golden wig, shaped cloth body with carved wooden lower limbs, cinched-in waist and shaped bosom, dressed in elegant pink silk taffeta gown with lace half gloves, flowers accenting her hair. Commentary: Consigned by the sister of Ralph Griffith, legendary collector and important figure in the success of the U.F.D.C. Ralph's sister has decided the time has come to sell this doll, which she has kept some twenty years since his passing. The doll is from Ralph's personal collection, and was central in the home display of his china dolls. She is circa 1850, and in excellent condition, though body may not be original.
